# What Cookies Does Elevate A/B Testing Set?

Which cookies and storage keys Elevate A/B Testing sets on your Shopify store, and which ones wait for cookie consent when consent is required.

Elevate A/B Testing sets a small number of cookies and browser storage keys on your Shopify storefront. They keep each visitor in the same experiment variation and link visits to experiment results. Elevate A/B Testing does not store names, email addresses, phone numbers, or physical addresses.

## Main cookies and storage keys

| Name | Type | Lifetime | Purpose | Waits for consent when required |
| ---------------- | -------------- | -------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| `eabUserId` | Cookie | 1 year | Anonymous visitor ID | Yes |
| `basicEabUserId` | localStorage | Until cleared | Anonymous visitor ID | Yes |
| `eabSessionId` | sessionStorage | Until the tab closes | Session ID | Yes |
| `ABTL` | Cookie | 1 year | Which variation the visitor is in for each experiment | No |
| `ABAU` | Cookie | 1 year | Which experiments the visitor has seen | No |

A 1-year cookie expires 365 days after Elevate A/B Testing last writes it.

Elevate A/B Testing also sets helper keys, most starting with `eab`, for audience exclusions, Split URL and theme experiment redirects, custom triggers, and visit context such as the landing page and country. These are set before consent. The `ABRT` cookie is set only when the Klar integration is on.

## How to store visitor IDs only after cookie consent

By default, Elevate A/B Testing sets all of these when a visitor arrives, before the visitor makes a cookie consent choice.

To hold back the visitor and session IDs (`eabUserId`, `basicEabUserId`, and `eabSessionId`) until the visitor accepts analytics in your cookie consent banner, go to **Settings**, then **Store Setup**, then **Tracking**, and turn on **Require Consent Before Storing Visitor IDs**.

* The variation cookies `ABTL` and `ABAU` are still set before consent, so experiments keep running and each visitor keeps their variation.
* Elevate A/B Testing reads consent from Shopify's Customer Privacy API. Use Shopify's cookie banner, or a banner app that records consent with Shopify.
* Turn the setting on only if your experiments were created after September 29, 2026. Older experiments cannot track visitors reliably with it on.
* The setting does not cover headless storefronts built with Hydrogen, Next.js, or Remix.
