# Create a Custom Event

Create a no-code custom event in Elevate A/B Testing for product, collection or URL visits, clicks, element views, or scroll depth.

***

Create a custom event to track a visitor action that the built-in metrics do not cover, such as visiting a specific product or clicking a new button. Six of the seven event types need no code. Every event you create is stored in **Custom Events** and can be reused in any experiment.

For actions that need your own code, see [Custom JavaScript Events](/elevate-helpcenter/experiment-setup/custom-events/custom-javascript-events.md).

### Where can I create a custom event?

You can start from four places. All four open the same **Add Custom Event** panel, and all four save the event to **Custom Events**.

| Start from | Path |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Custom Events | Sidebar, **Custom Events**, then **Create Custom Event** |
| Experiment goal | **General Info & Goal** step, **Browse all metrics**, then **Add Custom Metric** |
| Custom metrics | **Optional Settings** step, turn on **Custom Metrics**, then **Add new custom event** |
| Custom triggers | **Audiences** step, turn on **Custom Triggers**, then **Add new custom event** |

Creating an event during experiment setup is the same as creating it in Custom Events. You do not need to create it again for your next experiment.

### How do I create a custom event?

1. In the Elevate A/B Testing sidebar, under **Configure**, select **Custom Events**.
2. Select **Create Custom Event**. The **Add Custom Event** panel opens with the seven event types.
3. Select the event type that matches the action you want to track.
4. Enter an **Event name**. This is what appears in your results, so name it for the action: "Size guide opened", not "Event 1".
5. Add a **Description** if the name alone will not be clear to whoever reads the results later.
6. Under **Trigger**, set when the event fires. See the event type sections below.
7. Select **Save Event**. The event now appears in the Custom Events list.

After saving, perform the action once on your storefront and confirm the event fires. See [Manage Custom Events](/elevate-helpcenter/experiment-setup/custom-events/manage-custom-events.md).

### Trigger settings by event type

#### Product page visits

Select **Select Products** and choose the products that should fire the event. The event fires when a visitor lands on any of them.

If you leave the selection empty, the event fires on any product page.

#### Collection page visits

Choose the collections that should fire the event. The event fires when a visitor lands on any of them.

#### URL visits

Enter the URLs that should fire the event. The event fires when a visitor lands on one of them.

#### Clicks

Choose the element visitors click, such as a button, link, or toggle. The event fires each time a visitor clicks it.

#### Element viewed

Choose the element to watch. The event fires when that element appears on the visitor's screen. This tells you the visitor had the chance to see it, not just that it loaded somewhere below the fold.

#### Scroll depth

Set how far down the page the visitor must scroll. The event fires when the visitor passes that point.

### Will the event work on every variation?

Only if the page or element it watches exists on every variation. This is the common failure on page and theme experiments: variation templates and alternative themes do not automatically contain elements added elsewhere. If the tracked element exists only on the control, the variation records nothing and loses by default.

Preview each variation before launching and confirm the element is there.
