Lifestyle Product Imagery

Type: Image Test · Where It Runs: Product Page · Setup Time: ~10 min

Test whether lifestyle imagery (product in use, on a model, in a real setting) outperforms standard product photos as the primary image on your product page.

Why This Works

Most Shopify stores default to clean, white-background product photos. These are great for clarity, but they don't help shoppers picture themselves using the product. Lifestyle images (product in use, styled in a real setting, on a real person) create an emotional connection that flat product shots can't.

This is especially true for categories where context matters: fashion, home decor, beauty, outdoor gear. A pair of sunglasses on a white background tells you what they look like. A photo of someone wearing them out in the sun tells you how they feel.

Testing lifestyle imagery against your current photos lets you quantify whether that emotional connection actually moves the needle for your store.

Best For

  • Fashion, apparel, and accessories brands

  • Home and lifestyle products

  • Beauty and skincare

  • Stores that already have lifestyle photos but aren't using them as the primary PDP image

How to Set It Up

  1. In your Elevate dashboard, click Product Image Experiment

  2. Give your experiment a name (e.g. "Product Image vs Lifestyle Image") and add a description of your hypothesis

  3. Set your primary metric to Revenue per Visitor

  4. Select the product(s) you want to run the test on. You can do one or many, but starting with a few best sellers is a good move

  5. You'll see your Control (current experience) and Variation. Rearrange your images so the lifestyle photo is the primary image in the variation. If you already have lifestyle photos uploaded to the product in Shopify, just drag them into position

  6. If you don't have lifestyle photos yet, click Replace Image to upload one, select one from Shopify, or use Elevate's Generate with AI feature. Describe what you want, tag your existing product images as references, and Elevate will generate a lifestyle image for you

  7. Leave the traffic split at 50/50. No need to isolate traffic or set up audience targeting. Elevate handles content changes automatically

  8. Click Create Experiment. This puts it in a preview state so you can QA before going live

  9. Preview the variation and control in incognito on both desktop and mobile to make sure everything looks right

  10. When you're ready, hit Launch

As the test runs, visitors and orders will show up in the experiment table.

What to Look For

Primary metric: Revenue per visitor. This is the cleanest bottom-line signal for whether lifestyle imagery is actually driving more revenue, not just more engagement.

Also watch: Add-to-cart rate. If lifestyle images increase add-to-cart but revenue per visitor stays flat, it could mean the images are setting expectations the product doesn't meet. That's still useful data.

Timeline: 1-2 weeks for most stores if you're running the test on products with steady traffic. Don't call the test early. Wait for Elevate to show statistical significance before making a decision.
